IN TUNE WITH ART

Poor Elijah Foundation benefit in Ventura

You know Jim Messina’s music. Over the years, this gifted singer, songwriter and guitarist has created timeless tunes as part of Poco, Buffalo Springfield and Loggins & Messina.

What many people don’t realize is that he’s a gifted artist, too. His paintings — of schoolhouses, bank buildings and quaint inns — seem to harken back to simpler, quieter times. You can see his work — and maybe catch a glimpse of the man himself — from 3-10 p.m. Saturday at the WAV Theater, 35 W. Thompson Blvd., Ventura . The occasion is an art and music show to benefit the Poor Elijah Foundation, a new Ventura-based organization dedicated to providing financial relief to struggling musicians. The foundation was named after a Delaney Bramlett song and it is run, in part, by Bramlett’s daughter, artist Michele Bramlett.

Besides Messina’s paintings, work by Michele Bramlett and Jaesen Kanter will be featured. Providing the soundtrack will be Johnny Smith and David Bell, Paull E. Rubin, Paul Kanter and Victor Vega & The Bomb. Food and wine will be served and a five-minute trailer for “Matilija Magic — The Delaney & Bonnie Project” will be screened. The in-progress documentary, Michele Bramlett hopes, will help further her efforts to get her late father’s group, Delaney & Bonnie & Friends, inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
